Site News 2010

- Nearly a year after I brought my websites up to an accessibility standard equivalent to Level AAA conformance of the W3C's WCAG 2.0, I can now proudly state that they officially conform. Check out the About The Websites section of Lyndenlea Online (linked from the bottom of every page, just above the icons) for more information.
- Not entirely unrelated to this is the fact that the Lyndenlea websites are now completely devoid of advertising! Admittedly the most prominent example was just a little Amazon.co.uk search box below the Dynamic Site Menu, but as it was only generating a very tiny amount of money a couple of times a year (mostly thanks to my Dad and/or sister, I suspect) I've decided it's not worth the space it takes up on my pages.

- All change at Lyndenlea! In an effort to make more sense of the contents of the Lyndenlea Online site I've decided to move it in its entirety to a new home called About Lyndenlea. In its place is the relocated Site Index that now serves as a "landing page" for first-time visitors and anyone who just wants a quick summary of what's here. I've had something like this planned for a while, and in fact it was my original aim when I renamed the main site to Lyndenlea Online almost exactly two years ago.
- There's also a brand new addition to the Lyndenlea websites: Lyndenlea Milestones. This site records the results of my latest research project into roadside milestones around Bristol and Bath, complete with photographs and grid references so we can all keep an eye on them while we're out and about.

- In April last year, you may remember, I added a little icon to each external link on the Lyndenlea websites. You may also remember that in June last year I found that those icons weren't working properly in Internet Explorer 6, and so I removed them. Well, now I've finally upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and have Internet Explorer 8(!) to play with, I've decided to try again. This time I'm using a better method that will degrade gracefully to nothing in browsers that don't support the necessary CSS rule, so as a backup I've left the text in italics as well.

- Time for a quick update on my spammers blacklist. I've been adding IP addresses to it gradually over the last nine months and I'm now blocking no less than eighty-four! In a few cases, however, the same subnets have kept popping up, so I've adapted my code to also check against a new list of twelve subnets - all belonging to the same hosting company based in Belize, as it happens. As it's a hosting company rather than an ISP I can only assume their servers are being used as proxies by the spammers, so I doubt very much that I'm blocking any legitimate users.
